Suzani—derived from the Persian word for “needle”—is a traditional embroidered textile from Central Asia, especially Uzbekistan. Historically handcrafted with cotton or silk and inspired by nature, these vibrant textiles were used to decorate homes and given as part of wedding dowries.
In this episode, we dive into the captivating world of Suzani. After discovering these intricate works at a monthly art festival in Tashkent, I was so moved that I apprenticed with a local artisan family. As I learn the techniques of hand embroidery, we explore their dedication to preserving the traditional craft in a modern world increasingly dominated by machine-made imitations and tourist-oriented products.
